Statement on the Passing of President George H. W. Bush

“I will always cherish the moments I spent with President George H. W. Bush as we traveled across the world to help those whose lives were devastated by the 2005 tsunami in South Asia. Anyone in his presence was instantly struck by his sense of stature, decency, graciousness and caring. His sense of humor was self-effacing and unexpectedly playful. He was a man with real gravitas and unparalleled experience in life, government and politics but he never stopped saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ to everyone regardless of their station.

“President Bush was a hero and a statesman who understood what it meant to serve something so much greater than himself. He understood that when he was elected to office, he had a responsibility to uphold the dignity and legacy of not only his name but that he was a steward of institutions that define our nation and its contribution to the world. He showed us that our politics and our country can set a higher standard and be an example for others.

“While we mourn today, we know as people of faith that he is reunited with his beloved wife Barbara. Together they showed us how to live, serve and love. God Bless President George Herbert Walker Bush.”
