Beyond Politics: The Ghost from COVID that Haunts Trump and the GOP in 2026

The economy is growing. Real wages are up. The stock market is hitting highs. One hundred million Americans just got a tax cut. Government payrolls are down dramatically. More states are cutting taxes and flattening their tax codes. Unemployment remains low and the jobs report beat expectations again last month. For Republicans in Congress and President Trump, it’s a great record to run on in the run-up to what is historically a tough mid-term election for the party in power.

But Americans don’t seem to be buying it. Mr. Trump’s numbers are in the 30s. According to Statista some 6 in 10 Americans think the economy is getting worse. The prognosticator class is writing the obituary of the Republican House Majority. The Socialists are salivating.
